Hummingbird Feeders

In order for a hummingbird to maintain it high levels of energy they need to keep their metabolism at its optimum level and they primarily get their energy from flower nectar and sugar water which can be found in a hummingbird feeder.

The first hummingbird feeder to be made available commercially was designed by Laurence J Webster in 1928 as a gift for his wife after reading a story from the National Geographic regarding using small glass bottles to feed hummingbirds.

However, today there are many different designs of hummingbird feeders available and which can be brought from garden centers, discount marts as well as online. Most of the hummingbird feeders that are available today are either made from plastic or glass or ceramics.

However because a hummingbird will not naturally recognize a hummingbird feeder as a food source they need to learn how to use them. They achieve this by watching what other hummingbirds do and also through their own natural curiosity. Often you may find that should you decide to change the type of hummingbird feeder that you are using to feed yours then it will take them some time to recognize a new one.

A good way of helping them to recognize any new feeder is by placing the old one beside (but keep it empty).

What you do need to think about however when looking at buying a hummingbird feeder is not just the design of it but also how easy will it be to take apart and clean. Also go for the type of feeder which your hummingbirds are actually more comfortable with as well.

Certainly many people find that the basin style hummingbird feeder is the better option compared to the upside down bottle range. But which ever one you do decide upon you will soon be able to enjoy the thrill of watching these beautiful little birds going about what comes naturally to them.
