The Complete Guinea Pig Guide!

Guinea Pig Cages

The guinea pig is an animal that loves spending most of its time in its cage. The reason for such behavior is that in the wild these prey creatures frequently need to hide from their enemies.

Even when domesticated, these animals still enjoy eating, sleeping and playing in a secure area. Hence, it is extremely important for the owner of the guinea pig to make available a suitable guinea pig cage for the animal and arrange it properly.

Considerations for the guinea pig cage:

Although three square feet of space is preferred, you may be able to get by on two square feet of space. In addition, if you’re keeping more than one guinea pig in one cage, allow an extra two square feet of space per extra guinea pig. Guinea pig cages may be bought from your local pet store. Most pet stores stock guinea pig cages in sizes of two feet by three feet.

However, you should steer clear of cages with a wire bottom as these can cause sore feet in your guinea pig. In addition, sore feet are very difficult to cure. If your cage has a wire bottom then you can add felt to the bottom of the cage. This felt can be glued to the wire and the whole cage bottom should be completely covered.

By introducing some toys in your guinea pig cage, you can provide a fun, entertaining, and playful environment in which they can thrive. For even more excitement, you can add toilet paper and paper towel rolls, toys with bells that ring when shaken hung from the cage ceiling and 6 inches PVC pipes.

As you may guess, these all serve as excellent toys. In addition, guinea pigs also love chewing toys that can be easily destroyed. A hutch made with wood will make a great and fun toy to be kept in their cage.
